Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, talking to “Face the Nation,” made some serious accusations for the Democratic party and democratic Governors across the US.

“What Democrats want to do- we’re 100 days out from the presidential election. The only objective Democrats have is to defeat Donald Trump, and they’ve cynically decided the best way to defeat Donald Trump is shut down every business in America, shut down every school in America…” said Cruz.

Okay, let’s try to see what is in this statement.

“What Democrats want to do- we’re 100 days out from the presidential election…”

Yes, it’s true that we are now less than 100 days from the 2020 Presidential election. But it’s also true that we are 189 days since the first confirmed coronavirus case in the US – it was on January 21 when a man in Washington State was infected with Covid-19.

And coronavirus doesn’t give a flying duck about elections. It’s not like the virus will take a 100 days vacation so we can focus on the election. The virus is here, it’s spreading really fast and there is nothing you can do about it. Well, there are some things, but later about that.

Let’s see the second part of the statement.

“The only objective Democrats have is to defeat Donald Trump…”

Well, yes, that’s how it typically goes. If you are from one (major) political party and you have a candidate in an election you will want to defeat your opponent(s) from another (major) political party. It would be crazy to have another objective. That would mean that your guy is really really bad. The Lincoln Project, we are looking at you right now.

And the third part of the statement.

“…and they’ve cynically decided the best way to defeat Donald Trump is shut down every business in America, shut down every school in America…”

So, this is probably the most problematic part of his statement.

Is that something that they decided or is something that, once again, the virus is deciding on? Just yesterday, in another article we were talking about the situation in Florida, a state with a Republican governor, and we were comparing it to New York, a state with a Democratic governor. You don’t need to read the whole article, maybe it’s enough to just see this picture.

This is a comparison between coronavirus cases in both states. NY state was among the first states to shut down and among the last to (gradually) reopen. On the other hand, Florida was among the last states to shut down and among the first to (prematurely) reopen. The results speak for themselves.

And this is Cruz’s home state of Texas, also led by a Republican:

Do you need a comparison between NY state and Texas? Probably you get the idea.

So even if you are Republican that wants to help Trump in November with a fast reopening of the economy, as we said… the coronavirus doesn’t give a flying duck about elections… or economy… or education (we have an article on this subject too)… or anything.

Until there is a medication that is proven to help, or even better, until there is a vaccine – masks, social distancing and lastly, shutdowns, are the best prevention against the virus.

So, when someone says that shutdowns are just to hurt Trump… think again.
